CEO dispels reports of disqualification recommendation by his office as unfounded rumours, contemplates legal action

GANGTOK, 12 Apr: Chief Electoral Officer, D. Anandan, clarified today that he has not even received any complaint against the SDF candidate from Daramdin, leave alone recommend his disqualification to any authority.
“This is to clarify that no such proposal has been sent by the Election Department to the Election Commission for disqualifying the candidature of Shri D.N.Sherpa nor any complaint has been lodged by anyone against Shri D.N.Sherpa before the Chief Electoral Officer, Sikkim.  The Election Department strongly condemns such rumours especially on the day of Elections,” an Election Department press communiqué puts on record.
This rumour, of DN Sherpa, the SDF candidate for Daramdin having allegedly been caught with cash being distributed to lure voters on Friday night and accordingly disqualified, had been circulating since early this morning, starting with a news-report published in a local daily and travelling from there to the social media.
While this first rumour was dispelled and clarified in the morning itself, a new string of the rumour appears to have spilled out in the evening with social media “reporting” [quoting an All India Radio report] that the Chief Electoral Officer had recommended Mr. Sherpa’s disqualification to the ECI.
Speaking to NOW!, a clearly disturbed Mr. Anandan clarified that he had neither made any such recommendation, nor given any such statement to any news agency.
He warned against the circulation of such unverified “reports” and said that the Department was even considering legal action against those who had drawn him and his office into the matter by attributing statements not issued by them.
